Vitamin C Serum for Dark Spots in Pakistan: Which Type to Choose and How to Use It

Quick answer: For dark spots and acne marks, choose a vitamin C serum in a stable form if your skin is oily or acne-prone. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) is gentle and well suited to breakout-prone skin; pure L-ascorbic acid is the most researched but can sting and oxidises quickly. Pair vitamin C with alpha arbutin or niacinamide, use sunscreen every morning, and expect visible fading in 6 to 12 weeks.

Vitamin C is one of the most popular ingredients for dark spots, acne marks and dull skin in Pakistan, and also one of the most confusing to buy. Serums use different forms of vitamin C, at different strengths, in packaging that may or may not protect them. This guide explains what actually matters.

What vitamin C does for dark spots

Vitamin C is an antioxidant. On the skin it does three useful things: it interferes with tyrosinase, the enzyme that makes melanin, so new pigment forms more slowly; it neutralises some of the free radicals created by sun and pollution; and it supports collagen, which helps skin look smoother and brighter. It works on brown marks and uneven tone, not on raised or pitted scars.

The different forms of vitamin C

Vitamin C forms compared
FormStabilityFeel on skinBest for
L-ascorbic acid (LAA)Low: oxidises and turns orange or brownCan sting; acidicNormal skin used to actives
Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP)HighGentleOily, acne-prone and sensitive skin
Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP)HighGentle, hydratingDry or sensitive skin
Ascorbyl glucosideHighGentleBeginners, sensitive skin
3-O-ethyl ascorbic acidHighUsually well toleratedPigmentation, all skin types

Pure L-ascorbic acid has the most research behind it, but it needs a low pH to work and breaks down quickly in heat and light, which matters in Pakistani summers. Stable forms such as SAP convert to active vitamin C in the skin more gently.

What to look for when buying

  • A stable form if you live somewhere hot or your skin is reactive.
  • Opaque, airtight packaging. Clear bottles and large droppers let light and air in.
  • A clear, colourless or pale serum. A dark orange or brown L-ascorbic serum has oxidised and works less well.
  • Supporting brighteners such as alpha arbutin, niacinamide or ferulic acid, which tackle pigment in different ways.
  • A texture you will use daily. Oily skin does better with light, water-based serums.

GenFul One Tone Brightening Serum uses sodium ascorbyl phosphate with alpha arbutin, niacinamide, ferulic acid and vitamin B5, in a lightweight formula for oily, combination and sensitive skin.

How to use a vitamin C serum

  1. Cleanse, then apply 2 to 3 drops to the face.
  2. Start at night for the first couple of weeks; once your skin is comfortable, you can use it in the morning too.
  3. Follow with a moisturiser such as GenHydra.
  4. Every morning, finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen such as Daily Saviour SPF 60. Without it, sun keeps darkening the same spots you are trying to fade.

How long does it take?

Glow and brightness often improve within 3 to 4 weeks. Brown marks and uneven tone usually need 6 to 12 weeks of daily use with sunscreen. Take photos in the same light every two weeks to judge progress.

The short version

  • Pick a stable vitamin C if your skin is oily, acne-prone or sensitive.
  • Combine it with other brighteners and use sunscreen every day.
  • Judge results after 8 to 12 weeks, not days.

Frequently asked questions

Which vitamin C is best for acne-prone skin?

A stable, gentle form such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP). It is less likely to sting than L-ascorbic acid.

Should I use vitamin C in the morning or at night?

Either works. Morning use adds antioxidant protection under sunscreen; night use is gentler when you are starting. Many people begin at night and add mornings once their skin is used to it.

Can I use vitamin C with niacinamide?

Yes. Modern formulas combine them without problems, and they target pigment in different ways. One Tone contains both.

Why did my vitamin C serum turn orange?

It has oxidised. This happens mostly with L-ascorbic acid exposed to air, light or heat. An oxidised serum is less effective and can irritate.

Can vitamin C remove acne scars?

It fades flat brown marks left by acne. Pitted or raised scars need treatment from a dermatologist.

What is the price of a vitamin C serum in Pakistan?

GenFul One Tone Brightening Serum, with vitamin C, alpha arbutin and niacinamide, is Rs 1,839 with cash on delivery across Pakistan.
